Mount Oldonyo Lengai, meaning “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language, is an active volcano rising 2,962 meters in northern Tanzania’s Great Rift Valley. Known for its rare natrocarbonatite lava, which flows cooler than typical lava and appears dark in daylight, this peak offers one of the most unique climbs in Africa. Trekkers often begin their ascent at night to reach the summit by sunrise, where views stretch over Lake Natron, the Rift Valley, and even distant Kilimanjaro. Though steep and challenging, the climb rewards adventurers with unforgettable scenery, cultural significance, and the rare chance to stand atop an active volcano.
